A French singer and symbol : Renaud

Surprisingly maybe, Renaud, now 68, is one of the most popular French singers in France, among 3 generations of people.

He has composed 26 albums since 1975, of which 20 million units have been sold.

His songs are socially engaged, and his simple, unique look and way of life have made a symbol of him.

One of his greatest hits was the song Manhattan Kaboul which won a "Victoire de la Chanson", the most important song prize in France.

It was written soon after the Twin Tower attacks in 2001 and the war in Afghanistan, for his duo with Belgian singer Axelle Red.

It talks about an American man native of Puerto Rico and an Afghan girl, who both died in the towers, where they worked.  Here are lyrics in  Italian   -  English   -  French

She is problably now more famous internationally as former wife of a famous Hollywood actor  – being herself an actress too - but her fame started in France when she sang Joe Le Taxi at the age of 14  – which ranked #1 in France for almost 3 months.

Queen's song Bohemian Rhapsody performed by elder ladies

Queen's famous singer Freddy Mercury would have cerlainly loved this performance by Surrey-Harmony Choir.

He has not received during his life the Knight title by the Queen of England ... who later apparently regretted  - this title can only be given to a living person, and two other members of the band have received it.

According to Guiness World Records, Queen remains the music artists who have stayed the longest in the music charts :

MANHATTAN KABUL

Piccolo portoricano
Ben integrato, quasi newyorkese

Bambina afghana
Dall'altra parte del mondo
Mai sentito parlare di Manhattan
Per me ogni giorno miseria e guerra

Due stranieri agli antipodi, così differenti
Due sconosciuti, due anonimi, eppure
Polverizzati sull'altare

Polverizzati sull'altare
Della violenza eterna

So long! Addio, mio sogno americano
Non sarò mai più schiava dei cani
T'imponevano l'islam dei tiranni
Ma quelli avranno mai letto il Corano?

Sono tornato polvere
Non sarò padrone dell'universo
Questo paese che amavo tanto
Sarà allora un colosso d'argilla?

Gli dei, le religioni
Le guerre di civiltà
Le armi, le bandiere, le patrie, le nazioni
Ci renderanno sempre carne da cannone

Due stranieri agli antipodi, così differenti
Due sconosciuti, due anonimi, eppure
Polverizzati sull'altare
Della violenza eterna

Due stranieri agli antipodi, così differenti
Due sconosciuti, due anonimi, eppure
Polverizzati sull'altare
Della violenza eterna

MANHATTAN KABUL

Little Puerto Rican
Well integrated, almost New Yorker
In my building all of glass and steel
I take my job, a rail of coke, a coffee

Little afghan girl
On the other side of the earth
Never heard of Manhattan
My daily life is misery and war

Two strangers at the end of the world, so different
Two strangers, two anonymous, but yet
Sprayed on the altar
Eternal violence

A 747
Exploded in my windows
My sky so blue has become a storm
When the bombs razed my village

Two strangers at the end of the world, so different
Two strangers, two anonymous, but yet
Sprayed on the altar
Eternal violence

So long! Goodbye my American dream
Me never slave to dogs again
They made Islam tyrants on you
Have these ever read the Koran?

Turned to dust again
I will not be master of the universe
This country that I loved so much would it be
Finally a colossus with feet of clay?

Gods, religions
Wars of civilization
Weapons, flags, homelands, nations
We will always make cannon fodder

Two strangers at the end of the world, so different
Two strangers, two anonymous, but yet
Sprayed on the altar
Eternal violence

Two strangers at the end of the world, so different
Two strangers, two anonymous, but yet
Sprayed on the altar
Eternal violence ...

MANHATTAN KABUL

Petit Portoricain

So long !
